On the 20th of February 2008, for the first time, I heard the term “clubfoot” from a good friend. He encouraged me to start a program to provide a non-surgical treatment for children born with clubfoot in India. Since over 40,000 children are born with clubfoot in India every year, we believed that partnering with state governments would help us reach children from economically weaker families in rural India first.
Good intentions always attract good support. As luck would have it, the then Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit was born with clubfoot, and she readily gave her permission and directed the Health Minister, Prof. Kiran Walia, and the Health Secretary, Mr. Singh, to help us establish a state-level program.
The first training was organized on the 19th of January 2009, and on this historic day, Dr. Ignacio Ponseti addressed the participants. With the success of this first clubfoot training in Delhi, seven clinics were established in the city in March 2009. Dr. Atula Jamir joined as the first counsellor and coordinator.
In April 2009, we requested Dr. Mathew to serve as Honorary Medical Director and help train more doctors. CURE India was officially registered on the 8th of April 2009, with Dr. Mathew as one of the trustees. What began as a vision in 2008 has grown into the largest clubfoot program in the world in 2025. Today, 35% of children born with clubfoot in India receive non-surgical treatment through 442 clinics across the country. A total of 145 training programs have been conducted, nearly 10,000 doctors have been trained, and 1,15,000 children have been treated.
We are now a strong team of 261 members, with a 98% women-led workforce.
We had the privilege of the Honorable President Shri Ram Nath Kovid inaugurating the first Global Clubfoot Conference, which CURE India organized in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2017. This milestone was also appreciated by the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi JI.
This photo book captures 17 years of CURE India’s journey in an accessible format. Now, we have the opportunity and the need to double our impact by 2030.
With your support, we can achieve this goal together.
