Title: Butterfly
Size: 18" x 24"
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Type: Still Life
Aishwarya Rath's painting, titled "Butterfly," is a captivating piece that measures 18" x 24" and is skilfully executed in acrylic on canvas. Framed in a teal-green wooden frame with a golden inside border, the artwork falls under the category of still life (depiction of a still-life object or group of objects). The composition of the still life painting is intriguingly divided into two segments - background and foreground. The background exhibits a dynamic interplay of colours, applied with a knife or a flat brush, creating a harmonious yet unordered arrangement using different colours. Teal blue, yellow, brown, hints of black, and white seamlessly merge to form the backdrop. The background colours are mainly brown and teal blue with most of white near the antennae and to the right of the right upper wing and below the left lower wing. The blues are mainly below the right lower wing and above the left upper wing. The artist has tried to create the brush strokes in vertically aligned rectangular shapes of different sizes merging together. In the foreground, a strikingly beautiful butterfly takes centre stage, covering 2/3rd of the canvas. The butterfly has four wings that seem to be the leaf wing variety and features meticulously detailed wings, a body, and well-defined antennae. The wings are adorned with a unique design, with the upper two larger wings having thick black borders, thicker on the sides thinner above and below. The rest of the wing is done with bold brush strokes with the strokes visible edge to edge done in teal blue. The centre of the wings have black oblong-shaped markings with a yellow-golden border. the two lower wings are done in a teal-blue background with golden streaks radiating from the centre to the wing's edges. The borders of these wings are also black.
Two curved antennae are seen rising from the head but we cannot see any eye on the head Contrary to the expectation of flight, the butterfly is depicted in a stationary position with open wings, creating a sense of stillness and grace in the heart of the painting. The large oblong black marks on the upper wings with golden borders are where one gaze moves first as this is at the centre of the painting. The background colours harmonize in a dance of intermixing shades, with brown dominating and teal blue playing a significant supporting role. Bold strokes of golden, white, black, and teal blue enhance the brown hues, adding depth and texture to the overall composition. Aishwarya Rath's "Butterfly" invites viewers into a world where meticulous detail meets the spontaneity of colour, resulting in a visually captivating still-life experience. The artist has signed at the bottom right of the painting in black.
